Top-Tips For Maintaining Your Carpet
Installing brand new carpet can not only bring a sense of joy and freshness, it can really bring the wow factor to a specific room or home. It not only looks great, but feels even better. I mean, is there any better feeling than freshly laid new carpet?
However, carpets get old and dirty – it’s a fact of life. And it’s needless to say that when this starts to happen, the wow factor can quickly disappear. Since brand new carpets represent such a big investment, it is understandable to want to try and keep that fresh, new feeling for as long as possible.
Maintaining your home’s carpets is certainly not easy, as daily wear and tear definitely take their toll on your carpet or rug’s appearance. Letting little everyday accidents such as snags and spills pile up can quickly make a carpet or rug look old or dingy. With the proper care carpets can last anywhere from 10-15 years before needing to be replaced.
4 Tips to Maintain You Carpet
Here are four ways you can maintain your carpet’s appearance and keep that brand new feeling for as long as possible.
1. Use doormats and remove shoes
If possible, try and use both indoor and outdoor doormats at the entrance to your home. This will help to trap dirt and moisture and prevent it from being brought into your home. If possible, we would also always recommend removing your shoes, particularly for the first few months. Recent studies have found that people that wear shoes around the house could be walking in all sorts of unwanted germs.
We would also advise people to consider using rugs in high traffic areas such as hallways, stairways, entryways, etc. This can also help prolong the life of your carpet. More frequent hoovering in these areas might also be required and will help prolong the carpet life and avoid crushing.
2. Frequent Vacuuming
This might sound a little obvious, but new rugs and carpets really need daily vacuuming with a good, high quality vacuum during the first few weeks. Loose fibres are likely to work their way to the surface, and these will need to be removed by trimming it to the level of the other tufts. NEVER PULL IT OUT!
Also, by vacuuming as often as possible, you will not only help to prolong the look, feel and lifespan of your carpet (or rug), but also prevent any dirt or dust on the surface from accumulating in the carpet pile.
We would also recommend not using a high powered rotating brush vacuum cleaner for daily hoovering. Often, these types of hoover’s use powerful rotating brushes that can cause damage to a rug or carpet’s pile, especially around the fringe. Rug fringes in particular can easily get caught and cause permanent damage over time.
3. Clean your Carpet Regularly
The more frequently you clean your carpets the longer the life of the carpet will be. We would always recommend trying to get your carpets regularly cleaned, at least once a year, by a professional cleaning service. A professional carpet cleaner will be able to remove difficult stains, freshen your carpet up, remove any tough dirt, grime and pet hairs that have found there way into the carpet fibres.
Remember, the longer you allow dirt and stains to remain on a carpet or rug, the more difficult it will be to fully remove them.
4. Stain removal
When accidents occur or unwanted stains or marks are found on your carpet or rug, it is essential to quickly blot the stain or spillage in question. The longer stains or spillages remain on a carpet, the higher the chance of permanent damage.
It is important to remember to take caution when trying to clean these stains yourself. Lots of products on the market today that encourage you to clean the carpet yourself can contain chemicals that cause more damage. Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly before starting and try and test it in a hidden area to ensure it is safe.
